Hello, English learners(学习者). Welcome back to the English Pod. My name is Marco. And I'm Erica. And today we are going to be teaching you a very important technique(技巧) especially(特别) for the guys(家伙) if you want to have good luck with the ladies, right? Oh, Marco.
Well, today's lesson is called "That's Flattering." Right, so we are going to be teaching you how to flatter( 恭维) someone. Okay(好), so what does it mean to flatter( 恭维) someone? Well, basically(基本上), you're going to be giving compliments(恭维) and you're going to make that person feel good about themselves(他们自己). That's right. Okay, so "flattering."
Now, before( 在…之前) we get on with this flattering lesson, we need to look at some vocabulary(词汇) in Vocabulary(词汇) Preview(预演). All( 全部) right. On Vocabulary Preview today, we have two small words. So the first one is "bar(酒吧间) exam." The bar exam. The bar exam.
So the bar exam is that formal(正式的) test that lawyers(律师) must do(做) to become official lawyers(律师). Right. So it's that final exam in order to finally(最后) become a lawyer(律师). Okay, and what about our next word? Well, we're also going to hear in the dialogue "obnoxious(不愉快的)." Obnoxious.
Obnoxious. Okay, so this is an adjective(形容词). Yes, and it means something that is really, really annoying(恼人的). Okay, so something can be, so something can be obnoxious. Or someone. Or someone.
Okay, very good. So now we have these two words that we're going to listen to in the dialogue, and now let's listen to two people as(当…的时候) they flatter( 恭维) each other in our dialogue. Valerie. Hi. Wow(哇), how have you been? It's been such a long time.
Darlene. Indeed(真正地), it's been a while(一段时间). How have you been? Wow, you look amazing. I love what you've done with your hair. Really?
Thanks. I went to that hair salon(沙龙) you told( 告诉) me about, but enough(足够的) about me. Look at you. God(神), you haven't ate us today. What is your secret(秘密)? No.
Come on. Well, I've been watching what I eat, and I work out three times a week. By the way, I heard your son recently(最近) graduated(授予…学位). Yes, my little Paul is finally a doctor. They grow up so fast, you know. He is such a handsome(英俊的) guy(家伙).
He gets his(他的) looks(看) from his(他的) mother, of course. Thank you. What about your daughter Pamela? I heard she passed(经过) the bar(酒吧间) exam and married(娶) recently(最近). Oh yes, she had a beautiful wedding( 婚礼) in Cozumel, Mexico, and we all attended(出席). Such a lovely(可爱的) girl.
I hope my Paul is lucky(幸运的) enough to find(找到) a girl like that someday(有朝一日). But of course. Well, it's been great talking to you, but I have to get going. Same here. We'll catch(捉住) up soon. Maybe over coffee.
That would be great. Give me a call. See you soon. Bye. I cannot stand that woman or her obnoxious daughter. So this is your typical(典型的), normal(正常的), everyday(每天的) behavior(行为) that women show to each other, right?
Yeah, I think it's very common. It's very hard to argue(争论) against(倚在) this because I think everyone does(做) it. Or at least(最少的) you've heard maybe your mother or somebody talk to her friends like this, right? Pretend(假装) you like a person who you actually(实际上) hate. Right. You have to be courteous( 有礼貌的).
Is that what you're doing to me now? Alright( 好), no, I'm not. But we can take a look at some of this great language, very rich language that we found in this dialogue in Fluency(流利) Builder(建筑者). Fluency Builder. Alright, we're doing things a little bit(一点) different in this lesson. So we're going to do two Fluency Builders.
And in the first one, we're going to focus(使集中) on language you can use to flatter( 恭维) someone. Right, so let's get started. In the very first part of the dialogue, we heard Valerie say(比如说[用于举例]), I love what you've done(做) with your hair. I love what you've done with your hair. I love what you've done with. I love what you've done with.
Okay, so if somebody says this, basically, they're saying, I like the change you made. Okay, and change not only to your hair, right? It could be anything. So I love what you've done with your new house. Okay, or I can say I love what you've done with your garden. It looks so beautiful.
So something that you've changed, you can use this phrase for. Okay, and in this case(情况), it's her hair. So she is complimenting her on her hair. We also heard Darlene say, you haven't aged(变老) a day.
