The human race is experiencing a whirlwind(旋风) of technological(科技的) change, like we've never seen before. Advances(前进) in areas like AI, pervasive(普遍的) intelligence, extended reality, advanced robotics are changing the way we do life. In fact, when preparing for this talk, we challenged(向…挑战) ourselves with "what can we tell you that chat GBT can't?" To put this in perspective(透视画法), industry experts predict that technology is going to advance(前进) quicker in the next five years than it has in the last 100. A report published by Dell Technologies shows that the secondary school aged children, 85% of the careers they could go into, haven't been created yet. We're having to move at the speed of tech to keep up. This begs( 请求) one of the most important questions of our time.
How can we thrive(兴旺) in response to the rapid(快的) pace(步) of technological(科技的) change? Hi, I'm Charlotte. And I'm Emma, and yes, we're sisters. Just over a decade ago, we founded(创立) Digital Awareness(意识) UK to help people to use technology in a way that's positive for their safety and their well(井)-being. Prior(在前) to that, we were social media(媒体) advisors to global brands by day, and Charlotte was also a social media influencer by night. And we were helping companies to engage(使从事于) with their audiences using this relatively( 相对地) new and exciting medium(媒体) called social media(媒体).
One day, a school asked us if we'd like to give a careers talk to a group of 11 and 12-year-olds about what it's like working(使工作) in social media(媒体) with all these cool brands. And for us, there was literally(照字面地) life before and life after this talk. We listened and learned to this group as they told us about everything they were trying to navigate(驾驶) from cyberbullying, to grooming(整饰), to feeling left out, to spending hours scrolling(成卷形) through social media(媒体). And we felt a real sense of shame( 遗憾的事) and responsibility as we thought about how the things that we were doing might have been influencing their purchasing decisions, shaping(形成) their self(自己)-esteem(尊重), informing those digital habits, and not necessarily in the most positive way. So we left the corporate(社团的) world behind us to drive digital awareness(意识), digital literacy(读写能力) in schools. And we haven't looked back.
We've traveled around the world with teams of eSports pros, influencers, ethical(伦理的) hackers, people who have positive tech stories to tell, and we've spoken to, conducted(指挥) research amongst(在…之中(among)), and delivered educational programs to millions. Now today, we work with everybody from CEOs to politicians to grandmas. But at the heart of our business, we've always wanted to support those people who are most alive to technology. And these guys don't go online. They live online. Children.
So what happens when you give tablets, smartphones, social media, online video games, rapidly(快) advancing(前进) technologies to children with little or no idea of what the consequences could be? Well, we're going to tell you, and it's the wildest social experiment of our time, an experiment that has been cruel and wonderful, heartbreaking(悲伤或失望到难忍程度的) and heartwarming, empowering(授权与), all-consuming and unfulfilling, and every other emotion you could imagine experiencing at once. You would have all witnessed(目击) this experiment yourselves, looking at families, silent in restaurants as they stare( 盯着看) at devices, or at children laughing together at the latest TikTok craze(狂热). We believe that children are the key, not only to understanding the trends that are unfolding( 展开) today, but what's to come. Digital literacy spikes at ages 14 to 15, before gradually(逐渐地) dropping off throughout adulthood(成年) and falling again in older age. The things that we're seeing now happening in this digital playground will be trying to wrap(裹) our heads around months down the line.
In many ways, children are the experts. So, what have we learned? Well, we'll start by talking a little bit about some of the things we've learned over the last decade. So, we've seen young people become more entertained and connected and interacting(互相影响) with each other in ways that we only could have imagined, while simultaneously(同时地) managing online scams(诡计 v诓骗) and toxic(有毒的) influences and social media(媒体) comparison culture.
